Window film is a major sector for Clarifoil, the makers of biodegradable cellulose acetate films whose range also includes films for print lamination, labels and invisible tape.
Clarifoil has key advantages for windows in food packaging – their cellulose based films are biodegradable, clear and moisture permeable and its use prevents the condensation which can occur with moist foods such as pizza and cakes. Clarifoil film is also FDA approved for use in direct contact with food.
Fogging spoils packs and deters sales, hugely important considerations in a competitive and environmentally sensitive market where food waste and the costs of disposal are high on retailers’ and government agenda.
Marion Bauer, Clarifoil Marketing Manager, says clear, condensation free windows are essential for foods such as pies where purchases are strongly motivated by sight of the product.
“A clear view of the product is essential for customer appeal at point-of-purchase. But customers are also increasingly aware of packaging’s environmental issues, and a green solution which enhances the environmental credibility of the brand is also important. Clarifoil films have EN 13432 and ASTM D 6400 biodegradability accreditation and are also fully home-compostable, accredited to the Vincotte OK home compost standard”.
For pack designers, Clarifoil has the advantages of high gloss and resistance to scuffing and scratches. Production advantages are processability at high speeds with efficient cutting and gluing.
While food and confectionery are the largest markets for Clarifoil window film, uses also include perfume, toys and electronic products such as phones, where the film’s ability to be formed into curved shapes without stress lines is an added advantage.
Clarifoil window films are available in gauges from 24 micron to 115 micron enabling use of the lowest weight of film compatible with the required performance.
